YES,
i got it working, now.
My problem was that compression problem.
And fixing this didnīt work because i had a conf.ini in a mods folder which was there to reduce the effects to 1. But it effected, that my changes in
compression and so on were immediatly removed after str
arting the game.
Now this is great. I took of with a spit over London, flew over Dover, the CHannel enjoyed all the country side both english and french, Paris So great.
I forgot the time. Forgot to watch the fuel clock. And ran out of it. Now I had to land on french ( german controlled) airfield. Damn. Here is a photo right before landing an getting capped with the view to one of the perfect villages.
(I thougt about taking shots, but the urban areas are already there, so I post only this countryside shot.)

Amazing,
I can now emerse myself into BOB scenarios again with that sense of "suspension of disbelief".
Truly excellent work. Even on my old rig - which I now have an excuse to upgrade.
I went sightseeing and eventually landed at Biggin Hill and for fun taxied up to and went to park inside a hangar. My spit blew up into tiny fragments as I crossed the threshold of the open doors.
I'm no expert but I'm guessing it's part of the plate/textures thingy?
Not a problem - just thought I would comment on my observation.
For fun flew under Tower Bridge and also under London bridge - great stuff!
Thanks are just not enough but thanks Joe for a bunch for great work and a sim rejuvination.
ps. Hope someone can get this map into DCG pronto!

low res textures on airfields (again) |
|
 |
 |
The airfields look low res because they are Plates instead of textures....
I found it useful to open the IL-2 Sturmovik 1946\MODS\MAPMODS\maps\_Tex\land\summer\CAN_Channel folder and there are four or five textures which are still RGB and 3mb..... I changed then to indexed colour which makes them 1mb like the rest...
also using the Spitfire Mk! isn't very good because they have the bug where they rear up on landing and often overshoot the field..... best to use the new Spits & Hurri pack from SAS... Mk1b/2a/2b/va/hurri 2a... as their FM has been fixed and they land properly. |
I know what you mean, but I don't have the software installed to fix this problem myself. Some airfields (mostly Brittish load well in high res and are nice looking when you are on the ground. Maybe it's possible (when Canon agrees) to just repost the graphics involved, so i can overwrite them?

I have a c2 2.66, 8800GTS 512, 2 MB RAM

OK, found that I don't have sound in either the Spit VIII series or the IX series (all other Merlin Spits are OK), any ideas please?

Remember the old rule, "If it ain't broken, don't fix it"?
Well, I had the map up and running, happily working on a campaign for it. Then I remembered vtreluts S3TC fix, changing the TexCompress=2. And I thought "why not give that one a chance as well?". So i did.
And... all hell broke lose.
Not only did it freeze up IL-2 so completely, that I had to do a forced reboot of the machine - it didn't even react to ctrl+alt+del. Something happened that has affected my whole rig, with strange graphics effects breaking out even on the desktop. Despite numerous reboots.
I'm not blaming you vtrelut, I'm blaming myself.
So what is the easiest way to get a new working conf.ini? I have dumped the old conf.ini and run the set-up, but that hasn't fixed the general problem. What in the name of all humanity could have happened? Some sort of overload of the graphics card?

English Channel Map paratrooper error fix |
|
For those who are getting the dreaded paratrooper error, I found the culprit, at least in my game anyway. Going thru all of my mods one by one I found that it was Benders GUNFIRE mod that was causing the problem. Ordinarily I would have never looked to this mod for a paratrooper error but it turns out that the .tga files for this mod are sized at 1024. It seems that the textures in this mod being sized at 1024, when used along with the new English Channel map are just too much for the game to handle. Resizing all of the .tga files in the Textures folder to 512 eliminated the paratrooper error for me.
My take on this is that when the game loads and gets to the .tga files in the gunfire mod the game freezes and cannot load the paratroopers which probably loads right behind it. Thus you get the paratrooper error message. This is why using texture compression fixes the problem. But if you are like me, and you dont want to use texture compression, this is the fix for you.
Download this and copy it into
MODS\Bender'_GUNFIRE_DAY@NIGHT_COMBINED\3do\Effects\GunFire\TEXTURES.
MODS\Bender'_GUNFIRE_DAY@NIGHT_COMBINED\3do\Effects\ GunFireDay\TEXTURES.
When asked to over write, just say yes to all.
Be sure to make a backup of your original files just in case you want to go back to the way it was before.

Can't load winter maps in FMB |
|
G'day Canonuk, top map mate, thanks.
I seem to be having trouble loading the two winter maps in FMB. The summer maps load ok, no problems and i have flown the 1940 QMB mission and it looks great.
Heres the message I get at the bottom of the FMB window when loading these two winter one's.
World.land.().Loadmap() error.java.long.runtime exception: landscape "Can_Englishchannel/W1940 load.ini loading error. (the same again for 1943)
I compared all my map load.ini's and they are all the same except the winter ones have winter tga's. I checked my _tex/land/summer/Can_channel folder and all the tga's are there.
I haven't come accross this error in my game before, any idea's would be much appreciated.

Saburo Sakai - 10 of the airfields don't use plates - they're textures (e.g. Manston, Hawkinge, Coquelles ) but the others are plates.
miker8 - no, sorry. Not without totally re-engineering the map. The plates use a 1024x1024 texture, and that's the biggest they can. Otherwise it would be a case of several textures per airfield, and that would massively increase the demand.
phasmid - sorry - don't have time to do that. That's quite a fussy time consuming job.
Stargazer - no, that's not the plates. That's because the RAF hangars were some of the first I made when I was learning 3DSMAX, so they have simple collision models.
Mauri - if you can't save, check you've got all objects installed. Also, see note about 'bitumenearth' in first post.
wimsma - that's not quite how it works. The resolution of the plates can't be increased.
reflected - no idea. Followed the texture compression tips?
Kristorf - not my map doing that to your sounds!
Poltava - my conf.ini is posted earlier in this thread.
Joe

EXACTLY the same thing happened to me this morning!!! I actually flew the Canon English channel "FighterBoys" mission created by "someone, I forget...sorry" and had a wonderful time!!! Lots of aircraft, beautiful scenery...I was in Pig heaven..Okay I was using only the "Airfield Only actors.static "files and i didn't head down to London (where I wouldn't have seen the Tower and Bridges, etc...) But the Map worked!!
So...I come to the forum to report my experience with the mission, as requested by the creator....I drop by this thread...I see teh recommendation to change the conf.ini to tex Compression=2. I did that. DISASTER!!!! I loaded that SAME mission, and it crashed (BlueScreen of Death crash) my Puter at the mission-loading point of 30% supposedly right after the land objects had seemingly finished loading and aircraft loading was to begin. I have NO idea why that should have happened after only one simple change to the conf.ini. I've now also spent 2-3 hours trying to get back to my working Map install. It is Frustrating beyond belief.
I also would like to know if I can just re-install the UI 1.1.1 patch, overwriting my current MODs. I've added a half dozen MODs and new Aircraft since UI 1.1, but I'm willing to toss those aside if necessary.

Enabling S3TC Compression |
|
Just a thought for those who enabled S3TC and then got CTD's...
When enabling the S3TC compression either through the Setup.exe or in Conf.ini (TexCompress=2), did you also remember to enable the "Texture Compression ARB Extension" (TexFlags.TexCompressARBExt=1)?
